TYPES OF VOLES

Voles are rodents similar to field mouse. There are four types of voles with similar characteristics:

Meadow voles

these are the most common type in the U.S. They breed fast and love living in farms, yards, and gardens.

Prairie voles

these are found across the U.S., but they especially love agricultural fields, residential yards, golf courses, and gardens.

Water voles

these voles love swimming; hence they nest near water sources like brooks, ponds, and creeks.

Woodland voles

they are common in gardens or near homes where food is abundant.

Although they have slightly different habitats, they have a similar diet which includes seeds, bulbs, root systems, fallen fruits, tree barks, insects, grasses, alfalfa, and clover. Our vole pest control experts are skilled in identifying the type of vole infestation you have and creating an efficient vole treatment plan.

SIGNS OF AN INFESTATION

Voles may be small, but the damage they can cause to your lawn, garden, or farm is significant. Knowing the signs of vole damage is crucial to prevent further damage:

1. Tunnels

Voles create a network of tunnels beneath the ground that they use to travel and find food. These tunnels can be seen as raised ridges on the surface of your lawn or garden.
Voles feed on a wide range of vegetation, including grass, seeds, plant roots, and bulbs. If you notice gnawed stems or the roots of plants missing, it’s an indication there are voles on your property.
Voles create surface runways by traveling through the same path repeatedly. These vole runways are typically one to two inches wide and may be seen as a flattened trail of grass or vegetation.
Vole droppings are small, dark pellets that can be found along the surface runways or near their burrow openings.
Some species of voles feed on bark off trees during winter, causing extensive damage that can ultimately kill the tree.

HOW DO WE GET RID OF VOLES?

Our vole control and removal process begin with a thorough inspection of your property to identify the extent of the vole infestation. We use live traps to capture the voles and check them daily, strategically placing them near the burrows and runways. To improve trap efficiency, we use safe baits to lure voles in.

Once done, we’ll implement exclusion methods such as fencing or netting around garden plants and underground barriers and recommend habitat modification. The modifications can include the following:

1. Removing unwanted vegetation and debris
2. Trimming your lawn your closet or dresser drawer
3. Getting rid of weeds
4. Surrounding trees with mesh cylinders. This works great since voles aren’t climbers.
5. Cultivate the garden frequently to get rid of burrows and runways.
Finally, we’ll follow up with additional visits to ensure these pesky rodents are completely gone. During our visits, we’ll check traps and inspect the property for any new signs of vole activity, including underground tunnels and dead grass.
